HOMEWARD BOUND 1970

Captain Jack Hilton's tenure as Commanding Officer began on 13 August 1970 with a Change of Command Ceremony at sea while Sterett was in transit from Pearl Harbor to San Diego. After a lengthly and arduous Western Pacific deployment, including extended line periods in the Tonkin Gulf combat zone, DLG-31 led the DESRON 3 squadron of six destroyers in formation into San Diego harbor. Each ship was flying the classic "Homeward Bound Pennant"( Sterett's, was 306 ft long!) to the welcome sight of hundreds of families, friends, dignitaries and other well wishers greeting them ashore.
