SQS-26BX Sonar

Sterett was equipped with the SQS-26BX bow mounted, low frequency sonar. A modified version of this sonar is still in use today. It is a large and complex system equipped with 576 individual transducer elements formed into a cylindrical array. This large array is enclosed in a bulbous dome below the waterline at the bow of the ship. This sonar dome as so large that designers designed Sterett's rakish bow  to keep the anchors out beyond the dome. The dome drops about 9 feet below the keel of the ship, requiring a draft of 28.8 feet under the dome. This sonar system can function in either active or passive mode and process data from multiple simultaneous targets.
