Harpoon Anti-ship Missiles

1n early 1975 Sterett was the first ship of her class to have her two 3 inch 50 caliber guns replaced by quad tube Harpoon launchers. These were placed in the same gun tubs where the 3 inch guns had been mounted. The port launcher was aimed forward and to port and the starboard launcher was aimed aft and to starboard. These launchers were fixed (non-trainable) and carried 4 Harpoon missiles in each launcher with no provision for reloads carried on board. During the 1991 refit, the solid walled gun tubs were removed and replaced with pipe railings.

Harpoon (RGM-84) is an all-weather cruise missile. It carries a 510 pound warhead to targets over 75 miles away.
