The SPS-48 radar was the primary air search radar for the ship. This radar was a 3-D unit capable of providing not only range and bearing but also altitude. The phased aray antenna elecronically swept vertically to provide altitude data as the radar rotated in normal radar fashion. This radar was a critacal element in weapons control system. It's search capabilities provided accurate target data that was handed off to the SPG-55 fire control radars. This radar was a digital device tightly integrated with the NTDS (Naval Tactical Data System). It was very rubust and resistant to jamming, interference and weather effects.
