Captain Hilton's Passing
The sad news that Captain Jack Hilton, former Commanding Officer of DLG 31, died on Sunday May 18th was conveyed in a brief note to Newsletter subscribers on May 27. It was from an apparent heart attack at home in Arlington, VA. Captain Hilton served as Sterett's Skipper from August, 1970 to March, 1972. This was an era which saw the ship outfitted with several new advanced systems. These generated significant training, sea exercise, and drill requirements that were all met under his model leadership, enabling ship and crew to upgrade into the new technical environment and be combat deployment-ready.
A special section on the Sterett website has been added in memorium to our former Sterett CO. This includes a page where Sterett shipmates' condolences and tributes will be posted. Instructions for submitting your message to this message board are given in the section below.

Parking for the commissioning:- Guests staying at the BWI Hilton will probably want travel to and from the commissioning by boarding the Navy-provided buses. Rental and personal vehicles can be left at the hotel. For those coming in by car from other locations, Northrop Grumman has a parking lot that will be able to accommodate Commissioning guest vehicles for free. This parking lot is about two miles from BWI Airport (four miles from BWI Hilton). These individuals will be able to park their vehicles, then take the navy provided buses to the commissioning site. (Directions to the Northrup Grumman designated satellite parking lot will sent to those who accept the RSVP to the Commissioning). Travel time to the Commissioning site is approximately a 30 minutes. Too short for a serious road trip but long enough for a good sea story!
Attire: Business casual (slacks; shirts with collars golf/polo shirts are fine).
Admission and Seating: As mentioned in the April 25th Newletter, all Sterett Association members in good standing will receive an RSVP by mail. Those accepting will be put on the admittance list and will need photo ID for admittance on Commissioning Day. Those attending will also be issued Green passes (as a "Veterans" group). Seating will be in the Green Pass section . A sign will be there, with the seats roped off so the STERETT Association members can all sit together.
Belay our last! In the Commissioning Announcement appearing in the 31 March 2008 Newsletter it was reported that the Historic Frigate USS Constellation would be."...brought alongside the USS Sterett for this event." Correction, Correction: The USS Constellation will be brought bow-to-bow (facing) the new USS Sterett. Photographers take notice!
Now Hear This: First pitch for the the Orioles game on Sunday August 10th is scheduled at 1335. The bus is expected to leave the BWI Hotel about an hour before

USS Sterett played many roles during the Vietnam War
That was the topic Seattle McDougal of Alliance, Ohio chose to cover in her Marlington Middle School thesis paper for Ohio History Day as a surprise to her grandfather. Her fact-finding mission included visiting the Sterett Association website to learn more about the DLG/CG 31. She then had to organize a lot of information and naval words and terms to cover a big topic and present it clearly in the paper. Teachers must have taken notice. We congratulate Seattle on great results: the paper made the District finals and then went on to the Ohio state finals competition. Excellent work like this would make any grandfather, such as - Frank McDougal - a Sterett shipmate - very proud! "Bravo Zulu" (well done) , Seattle. Keep at it!

Whether it was off Yankee Station in the Tonkin Gulf or on fleet exercises and operations in the Sea of Japan or anchored alongside in port , nearly every sailor who has sailed with the Seventh Fleet, going back to the time President Kennedy, has crossed tracks with the "Hawk". The Sterett Association bids farewell and salutes her long active service! Click link below.
