 Commissioning Update

The Commissioning of USS Sterett DDG 104 is drawing near and the planning has started for the ship's crew, the City of Baltimore and the Sterett Association. Every month, at least one representative from each group attends a meeting to review the progress and tighten up the loose ends.

A ship's commissioning is an expensive undertaking. The ship's CO is provided a limited amount of funding but this is not adequate to cover all the anticipated expenses.

The Navy League of Baltimore has taken the lead in helping to organize and plan for the Sterett Commissioning activities.

Many organizations and individuals are being asked to contribute to the commissioning event. Most groups and companies that will graciously make donations to the Sterett Commissioning have little or no relationship to any USS Sterett, current or previous.
We in the Sterett Association have a unique relationship with DDG 104 and should take an active role to ensure the Commissioning of the newest Sterett is an event to remember.

Therefore, the Association is requesting our members consider making a contribution to this worthy cause. Even if you cannot attend the commissioning, we ask that you help to support this great event.

For the Good of the Ship

Displayed below are the Navy League's official recognition levels for corporate and personal donations. All Association members are asked to donate what they can.

Association donors are asked to submit their contributions through our Treasurer, Dennis Dean.

* Should there be an excess of contributions they will be given to the USS Constellation sharing the waterfront with the Sterett Commissioning.

Win 2 Nights Free in San Diego

Considering the situation we thought some of you would like to help with donations. Whether it's $5 or $100 all help will be received with great appreciation. Those who can donate $100 or more will be entered into a drawing with one contributor winning:

·         2 hotel nights free at the next Sterett Reunion in San Diego. Now there is an exciting opportunity!

·         Be awarded at the Commissioning the status of "Wardroom Member"

Can we count on you help?

Please send your contribution to:

                           Dennis Dean

                           Secretary-Treasurer, USS Sterett Association

1815 Kalorama Rd NW, Washington, DC 20009-5188

Checks should be made payable to the USS Sterett Association. Please include your name,

postal address, e-mail address and/or telephone number. Dennis will make sure your contribution is individually credited within the Navy League's DDG 104 Commissioning Committee recognition levels shown below.

19 March 2008 Commissioning Committee Meeting Report from John King

Wayne McBrian, Evan Mickel and I attended the Commissioning Committee Meeting for the newest STERETT today in Baltimore where she will be commissioned on August 9, 2008.  The Commanding Officer gave an overview of the ship to include the ship's compliment  of officers and enlisted.  A few facts:
  • Cost $1.35B, of which more than half is in electronics.
  • The radar system can detect a moth on the horizon and must remove these extraneous inputs to focus on the beer-can-sized target approaching at Mach 3.
  • 272 Officers and sailors will be aboard at commissioning
28 Officers
27 Chief Petty Officers
217 E6 and below
54 under 21 years-of-age
44 female officer and enlisted

  • Move aboard day is five weeks from Friday

The 2008 Junior Sailor of the Year from STERETT  gave a briefing today:

  •  DC2 Nicole Salyers of Houston Texas on the right is Commanding Officer Brian  Eckerle.

More Commissioning Details are on the Way

Information regarding the DDG 104 USS Sterett Commissioning and our Association's participation will be forwarded by newletter shortly. Details and updates, including a tentative POD. will also soon be posted on our website to guide your planning.

Shipmate Evan Mickel has this under control and will update us on the August events and Hotel information when more information becomes available.

Evan is also on the Sterett Commissioning Committee and is helping to coordinate events for the Ships Crew during their stay in Baltimore. Add this to the task at hand and Evan is doing a huge job on our behalf.
